With Father’s Day right around the corner, what better way to show the dads in your life how much you appreciate them than by taking them to see a Broadway show!
But which Broadway show? We’ve put together this handy guide to help you figure out which Broadway show is right for your type of dad.
The Old School Dad
Your dad is a classic. He taught you how to throw a ball and how to fix a car. He loves doo-wop music and the 1953 Yankees, and he sure knew how to dance back in the day.
The Perfect Show: If you have an Old School Dad, take him to see A Bronx Tale. Set in the 1960s and based on Chazz Palminteri’s play and movie, A Bronx Tale follows Calogero, a young man who finds himself torn between the mob boss he looks up to and his own honest and principled father.
Alternate: Jersey Boys, Smokey Joe’s Cafe
Dad-Joke Dad
Your dad loves to laugh. He’s always pulling pranks and cracking jokes. Even if his jokes aren’t always particularly good, you know he’s just trying to put a smile on your face—and his.
The Perfect Show: The Play That Goes Wrong follows Cornley Polytech Drama Society’s production of The Murder At Haversham Manor, a 1920’s mystery. Unfortunately for the theatre troupe the play goes, well, wrong. Hilarity ensues. Full of slapstick gags and other antics, The Play That Goes Wrong is perfect for the dad who is always looking of a reason to laugh.
Alternates: The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q
Sentimental Dad
If your dad is the sort of dad who wells up during a touching movie or an important life event (graduation, anyone?) you’ve got a Sentimental Dad.
The Perfect Show: Take your Sentimental Dad to see Kinky Boots, a musical about a man who inherits his father’s shoe factory, and must find a way to keep the business a float. An unlikely friendship with a cabaret star named Lola leads to an outrageous idea—and some fantastic footwear.
Alternates: Come From Away, The Band’s Visit
Jukebox Dad
When your dad is a music lover, it seems like no mattber what comes on the radio your he is ready to sing along. Some Jukebox Dads love a certain artist or genre, while others just love anything they can tap their feet to. Either way there’s a show for them!
The Perfect Show: If your dad loves tunes, take him to see Escape to Margaritaville, where the world of Jimmy Buffett’s music is brought to life. When a laid-back singer-songwriter who doesn’t take life (or anything) too seriously, meets a driven and career-oriented tourist, he suddenly finds himself examining his unexamined life.
Alternates: Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical
There you have it. The perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day, no matter what type of dad you have! But you’d better hurry, Father’s Day is coming up. Book your tickets now!
