Fresh Faces, Timeless Stories: Recasting Beloved Characters

And Juliet Broadway Musical Group Tickets

Broadway is made special not only by the stories being told on stage but also by the ever-evolving interpretations of those narratives. Each new actor brings a fresh perspective, a new lens through which we, as an audience, can experience timeless tales. While the characters and plots may be ones we've encountered before, the arrival of a new face can redefine our understanding of these characters, introducing us to nuances and subtleties we may have previously overlooked. Keep reading to find out which new actors will join established casts this season.

One actor taking the Broadway stage by storm is Trey Curtis, who is currently playing the role of Alexander Hamilton in Lin-Manuel Miranda's hit musical, Hamilton. Although this is his first leading role on Broadway, Curtis is in no way new to the stage, having understudied the roles of Alexander Hamilton, Hercules Mulligan, James Madison, Marquis de Lafayette, and Thomas Jefferson. Having starred as Hamilton in the show's limited run in Puerto Rico, Curtis quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with and is already receiving praise from fans for his talented vocals and masterful handling Hamilton’s complex rap verses.

Stepping into the spotlight next is Charity Angél Dawson, who has taken on the role of Angélique in the musical & Juliet. Dawson, a seasoned performer, is no stranger to Broadway. She has showcased her talent in productions like Waitress and Mrs. Doubtfire, and her performances have consistently garnered critical acclaim. Now, she brings her prowess to the role of Juliet's nurse and confidant, Angélique. The & Juliet plot reimagines Juliet's story post-Romeo, and Dawson embraces this opportunity to infuse new life into the character who was not even named in the original play. Dawson's portrayal breathes fresh air into the character, offering audiences a more empowered and independent version of Juliet's mother figure.

But this is not all news for & Juliet. Young actress Maya Boyd is set to step into the spotlight, replacing Lorna Courtney as Juliet. This big change gives fans of the show the possibility to witness an alternative interpretation of the much-loved character. This won't be Boyd's first time on Broadway. Her burgeoning career on the stages of NYC began with a role in the revival of Merrily We Roll Along, a production that's currently running at the Hudson Theatre. Boyd's journey from her debut to landing one of Broadway’s most iconic roles is a testament to her dedication and talent. As she prepares to bring her fresh take on Juliet to life, we can't wait to see Maya Boyd on stage beginning Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

Next on the list are the fierce and fabulous Queens of SIX: Khaila Wilcoxon, Storm Lever, Jasmine Forsberg, Olivia Donalson, Didi Romero, and Gabriela Carrillo. These talented actresses each bring their own unique energy, charisma, and talent to their respective roles as the wives of Henry VIII, reimagined as pop divas in this hit musical. Wilcoxon's Catherine of Aragon is regal and resilient, with fans praising her take on the role as "unparalleled." Lever's Anne Boleyn, called a "standout" by reviewers, is vivacious and cheeky, and fan-favorite Forsberg is sweet yet solemn as Jane Seymour; Donalson's Anna of Cleves is sassy and self-assured, Romero's Katherine Howard is flirtatious yet fragile, and Carrillo's Catherine Parr is strong and reflective. Having starred in the show's "Aragon Tour" from 2022 to 2023, the six powerhouses are redefining what it means to be a 'queen.'

Broadway enthusiasts also welcome the duo of Mary Kate Morrissey and Alexandra Socha as they step into the iconic roles of Glinda and Elphaba in the critically acclaimed musical Wicked. Both actresses bring a wealth of experience and talent to the table. Morrissey, who will enchant audiences as the green-skinned Elphaba, is already familiar with the world of Oz, having previously been Elphaba's standby. Socha, stepping into Glinda's glittery shoes, has a rich theatrical background that includes a notable stint in Spring Awakening, as well as a powerful performance in Fun Home. This accomplished duo is expected to breathe new life into the enduring story of friendship, acceptance, and magic, to fans’ delight.

In Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Austin Durant is taking over the reins from Boy George as the charismatic Harold Zidler. Durant is no stranger to Zidler's flamboyant persona, having originated the role in the North American tour of the show. He even had a brief but memorable run portraying Zidler on Broadway back in 2019. Durant's Broadway resume boasts of a variety of Broadway shows, including Macbeth, War Horse, and You Can't Take It With You. Meanwhile, Boy George, who has been playing Zidler at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, will bid adieu to his Broadway run on May 12.
