Paradise Square FAQs

Paradise Square on Broadway

Paradise Square is a powerful Broadway-bound musical about the events of the 19th century in New York.

It’s New York, 1863. The story centers around a saloon called Paradise Square located in Five Points, a notoriously dangerous Lower Manhattan slum. The saloon is owned by a racially mixed family that serves as a symbol of potential cultural and racial harmony. Unfortunately, this glimpse of harmony is about to be ruthlessly shattered by the current state of society. This place and family connected two radically different communities - free Black people and Irish immigrants, but not for long.

Paradise Square is filled with nuanced choreography crafted by renowned dancer Bill T. Jones, who combines Irish step dance with African Juba and creates intense emotion, making you see and feel the meld between two cultures. Staging is done by award-winning set designer Allen Moyer, who received Tony Award® and Drama Desk Award nominations for his work on the 2006 musical Grey Gardens. The moving and, at times, heart-wrenching songs you’ll hear in the show were written by Grammy® Award recipient Jason Howland, Grammy®-nominated songwriter Nathan Tysen, and highly-skilled and experienced songwriter and voice teacher Masi Asare. This musical is a must-see for theatre lovers of all kinds.
