Beetlejuice is a musical comedy with a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King, music and lyrics by Eddie Perfect, and direction by Alex Timbers. The show is based on the 1988 Tim Burton film of the same name.
The plot centers on Lydia Deetz, a young girl whose mother has recently died. Lydia is going through a tough period with her dad, who, from Lydia’s perspective, doesn’t seem to care about the tragedy in the family. Charles (dad) is busy planning out his new business idea and has a romance with Delia, his daughter’s life coach. Lydia feels like no one understands her and desperately tries to get attention.
One day she was scared by a couple of ghosts - a young couple who lived in the house before (Maitlands). They want the Deetz family out of their home as soon as possible. Lydia unsuccessfully tries to tell her dad that the house is haunted. However, her worries get dismissed, and instead, she learns that her dad and Delia got engaged.
Angry, she storms out onto the roof, where she meets Beetlejuice, a demon who dreams about getting rid of the curse that makes him invisible to the living world. Beetlejuice realizes that the girl can see him and is a perfect candidate for breaking the curse. Lydia just needs to say his name three times and the curse will be lifted. But there would be no story if everything was that easy…
