Video: Joyce DiDonato On The Met's New Production of Cendrillon

Video

If you think you haven't heard of Cendrillon, perhaps it's because you know her by a different name: Cinderella.

The familiar fairy tale takes new life at The Metropolitan Opera this spring in Massenet's gorgeous retelling of the story. Designed and directed by Laurent Pelly, this production centers imagination, inscribed with towering calligraphic text, as though it's a storybook come to life.

Joyce DiDonato, who plays the title role, speaks of the character's resilience in the face of loneliness and sorrow. "This particular opera is one that emphasizes the magic and the power of love," says DiDonato. "It's a gift that you give yourself."
