A new addition to The Broadway Collection, The Great Comet will blaze to Broadway this fall at the Imperial Theatre. Created by Dave Malloy and directed by Rachel Chavkin, The Great Comet will open for previews on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 with the official opening night set for Monday, November 14, 2016.
The Great Comet is an inspired adaptation of a 70-page slice of War and Peace. It is the story of Natasha, a beautiful ingénue visiting Moscow as she waits for her fiancé Andrey to return from war. She is seduced by the dashing, but married, Anatole, leading to the destruction of her position in society. Natasha’s only hope in redeeming herself lies with Pierre, a lonely outsider whose love and compassion for her is the key to the renewal of his own soul.
Designed by Mimi Lien, the staging and seating of The Great Comet is unique in that it has been converted from a proscenium theater stage into a 360-degree experience of a Russian salon. Cast members and musicians will move around the theater, with platforms and aisles running through the atypical seats. Each audience member will see the musical from a different point of view, ensuring a riveting experience for all.
