Broadway Inbound

Each and every group is unique. Whether you're coming with a busload of your friends from the nursing home or celebrating Emily's bachelorette party, each group has its own specific wants and needs when it comes to picking the perfect Broadway show. Fortunately, no one knows Broadway better than our staff at Broadway Inbound. We're lucky enough to see almost every show that opens on Broadway, which makes every staff member on our team a bona fide theatre expert.

There's nothing we love more than talking about our favorite shows, so we've assembled a list of some of our current Staff Picks. Last month, we brought you some of our favorite Off-Broadway shows. This month, we're looking ahead to the shows that we just can't wait to see. Read the picks below, and stay tuned for even more Staff Picks next month.

Keith's Pick: Meteor Shower

Keith caught the theatre bug when he played Nicely Nicely Johnson in his sixth grade production of Guys and Dolls. He loved living vicariously through the characters and getting to experience their emotions. His favorite part of musical theatre was the concept that a character’s emotions were too much for them to convey through words alone. “To see emotion expressed through music is truly magical.”

All-Time Favorite Musical: RENT changed the way I saw theatre, and it broke the mold for the industry in so many ways. That was the first show where I felt every emotion on the spectrum and truly felt transported into their world. It was also my first introduction to a show featuring the LGBT community.

Keith Recommends: I can't wait to see Meteor Shower, which stars two comedy powerhouses, Amy Schumer and Laura Benanti, in a play written by Steve Martin. His musical Bright Star was one of my favorite shows, so I am excited to see his take on a play. I also love any play that’s a “dinner drama” - any time two families come together to share a meal, you know there’s going to be drama, laughs, and emotion.

Perfect For: Anyone looking for a good night out - with a lot of laughs.

Guaranteed To Be: Funny, Compelling, Entertaining

The Bottom Line: Amy Schumer’s Broadway debut.

Fatima's Pick: Once On This Island

Fatima didn’t know how much fun Broadway could be until she saw her first show: Matthew Broderick starring in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. After that, she jumped at the opportunity to work in the tour and travel industry, where she could see show after show. Now a theatre veteran, Fatima still looks forward to the opportunity to see a show and connect with the story.

All-Time Favorite Musical: Although many shows have a little piece of my heart, I have to say that Beauty and the Beast is my all-time favorite. I saw it so many times, and every time I loved it more and more. "Be Our Guest" was always just magical, and when the Beast turned into the Prince, it just took my breath away every time.

Fatima Recommends: I have a soft spot in my heart for Once On This Island. I first saw it when my daughter’s middle school did a production, and I loved it! The kids did such a good job, but I know it will be even more amazing on Broadway. I can’t wait to see it in the round at the Circle in the Square Theatre. This story of a young girl growing up on a Caribbean island means a lot to me, since I was once a little girl growing up on a Caribbean island.

Perfect For: This is a great show for student groups. This is a show that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Guaranteed To Be: Fun, Sweet, Courageous

The Bottom Line: The love story!

Mary's Pick: My Fair Lady

Mary’s introduction to theatre was The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. She loved seeing children up on the stage, and she wanted to be there too. She especially loved the musical numbers and the idea of telling a story through song. As she grew up, she started seeing plays, and she fell in love with those too. Now, Mary loves a little bit of everything, and probably sees more theatre than anyone in our office!

All-Time Favorite Musical: I saw Les Miserables several times, and I always loved the epic storytelling and going on the journey with the characters. I laughed with them, I cried with them, and I cried some more with them.

Mary Recommends: I know with Lincoln Center Theater in charge, this production of My Fair Lady is going to be top-notch. The team is outstanding, and I know they’ll choose the right people for the cast. I love the story and the music. It’s a fairy tale - because it’s the story of the world opening up to a young woman. She discovers who she is and what she can become.

Perfect For: People who love classic theatre with timeless music, big casts, and a sweeping score.

Guaranteed To Be: Beautiful, Timeless, Classic

The Bottom Line: I trust Lincoln Center a lot. They have never let me down.

Christopher's Pick: M. Butterfly

Christopher’s first Broadway show was Hairspray, when he was seventeen. After seeing how energizing live theatre could be, he was totally hooked, and he spent most of his college years playing show lotteries and buying cheap tickets whenever he could. Christopher loves how diverse Broadway can be: “Whether you enjoy the drama or comedy of a straight play or the musicals that move you to tears or dancing – it all happens on Broadway!”

All-Time Favorite Musical: Next to Normal is my favorite Broadway show ever. I’m a sucker for intense emotions, and I love the rollercoaster ride of highs and lows in one piece of theatre.

Christopher Recommends: When M. Butterfly originally debuted on Broadway in 1988, it was very successful and became a studied and acclaimed play. For this production, master playwright David Henry Hwang has returned to the script and updated it with new information that has come to light since the play’s premiere. It will also be so interesting to see Julie Taymor direct a play instead of a musical. The original role was a star-making role for BD Wong, so I'm also excited to see the performances.

Perfect For: This is a must for all theatre lovers. I think it will also be great for groups of adults as well as high school and college theatre students.

Guaranteed To Be: Powerful, Intelligent, Passionate

The Bottom Line: A modern classic play directed by the visionary Julie Taymor.
