Here at Broadway Inbound, we proudly know a thing or two about Broadway. We’re frequently asked what shows we’d personally recommend and what we like to do around the city. We thought we’d take you behind the scenes on what our perfect Broadway day would look like! Check out Kevin’s day below, and tell us about your perfect Broadway day over on our Facebook page.
My Perfect Broadway Day starts at the southwest entrance of Central Park by Columbus Circle. I immerse myself in the picturesque scenery and take a stroll through New York’s favorite man-made paradise to experience the serenity juxtaposed against the formidable skyline of the city. Central Park is also a fascinating place for people-watching where dozens of different cultures and languages converge on one spot to experience one of New York City’s most famous landmarks. That feeling of tranquility and togetherness amidst the imposing modern world sets the mood perfectly for the rest of the day ahead.
After walking through the park to the East Side of the city, I find myself walking up the iconic steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I’d spend the afternoon in awe of the beauty created out of often harsh and difficult situations by passionate men and women determined to represent the honest human condition. I would lose myself for hours studying artwork I love, artwork I’ve never seen before, and artwork that feels new every time I see it.
After a quick stop at home for a shower and a change of clothes, it’s off to my next stop at The Smith: Lincoln Center—one of my favorite restaurants in the city. A stone’s throw away from Central Park, The Smith: Lincoln Center has been a popular and beloved part of the Lincoln Center area since it opened in the fall of 2012. With an eclectic American menu and an always-bustling environment that reflects the city’s “fast and chic” ideals, The Smith is a perfect way to celebrate the excitement and pulse of New York City. I would definitely make sure to sample some of their fantastic original cocktail recipes—and their Ricotta Gnocchi is to die for!
Finally, I’d head down to the Theatre District full of love for New York and ready for the best part of the day: seeing the groundbreaking and exciting Broadway musical Come From Away. This Tony®-winning celebration of empathy, compassion, and connection in the face of fear may be set in a small, remote town in Canada, but Come From Away’s universal message sweeps you away from the very first downbeat. Everyone in the world remembers the events of the 9/11 tragedy—especially those who experienced it in New York City—and this incredible show evokes those emotions respectfully with a complex exploration of the varying and often inspiring human responses to a horrifying reality.
Never once is Come From Away a dirge; if anything, the show can be describes as a spirited and impassioned declaration of love and life. An 85-minute masterpiece that hits every emotion and leaves you elated, Come From Away is the perfect show with exceptional writing and thrilling performances that embodies the magic of Broadway!
After that, it’s a quick subway ride home and off to bed with the Come From Away songs in my head and the message in my heart! For me, this is the perfect Broadway day!
