Find Out This Month's Staff Picks

Broadway Inbound

Each and every group is unique. Whether you're coming with a group of Girl Scouts or celebrating your uncle's 75th birthday, each group has its own specific wants and needs when it comes to picking the perfect Broadway show. Fortunately, no one knows Broadway better than our staff at Broadway Inbound. We're lucky enough to see almost every show that opens on Broadway, which makes every staff member on our team a bona fide theatre expert.

There's nothing we love more than talking about our favorite shows, so we've assembled a list of some of our current Staff Picks. Last month, we brought you some of our staff's favorite shows from the last season. This month, we're back with a new batch of our favorite shows. Read the picks below, and stay tuned for even more Staff Picks in the coming weeks.

Keith's Pick: Wicked

Keith caught the theatre bug when he played Nicely Nicely Johnson in his sixth grade production of Guys and Dolls. He loved living vicariously through the characters and getting to experience their emotions. His favorite part of musical theatre was the concept that a character’s emotions were too much for them to convey through words alone. “To see emotion expressed through music is truly magical.”

All-Time Favorite Musical:RENT changed the way I saw theatre, and it broke the mold for the industry in so many ways. That was the first show where I felt every emotion on the spectrum and truly felt transported into their world. It was also my first introduction to a show featuring the LGBT community.”

Keith Recommends: Wicked takes a familiar story that you think you know and turns it on its head. With an emotional journey that will change every opinion you ever had about the Witches of Oz, it tells a story about love, fearless courage, and the power of friendship. Wicked will give you an unforgettable experience filled with laughter, large flashy chorus numbers, heartbreaking ballads, and a story that will touch you to the core.

Perfect For: A group of friends looking for a great night out.

Todd's Pick: The Band’s Visit

Todd’s love of theatre began at an early age, but like most people, it really blossomed in high school after he saw his first Broadway show, Into the Woods. Through the years he’s been a performer, producer, stage manager, house manager, and for the last 15 years, a marketing and graphic design professional helping to share the joys of Broadway with the world. His favorite thing is talking about the Broadway flops he’s seen (but this isn’t the time or place).

All-Time Favorite Musical: “Sondheim, Sondheim, Sondheim. Probably Sweeney Todd or Into the Woods, maybe Company. No wait, Once On This Island. Not Sondheim, I know, but it makes me cry every time.”

Todd Recommends: The Band’s Visit is the kind of show that you immediately want to watch again after the curtain falls. I loved the original movie when it came out, and I was really excited to see this musical version when it opened Off-Broadway last year. The combination of David Yazbek’s exquisite, funny score (his best to date), David Cromer’s naturalistic but heightened direction, and incredible performances from Tony Shalhoub and Katrina Lenk made it my favorite musical of the 2016-2017 season. I’m so thrilled it’s coming to Broadway, and I can’t wait to see it again.

Perfect For: Groups who like musicals that make them think and feel.

Fatima's Pick: Anastasia

Fatima didn’t know how much fun Broadway could be until she saw her first show: Matthew Broderick starring in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. After that, she jumped at the opportunity to work in the tour and travel industry, where she could see show after show. Now a theatre veteran, Fatima still looks forward to the opportunity to see a show and connect with the story.

All-Time Favorite Musical: “Although many shows have a little piece of my heart, I have to say that Beauty and the Beast is my all-time favorite. I saw it so many times, and every time I loved it more and more. ‘Be Our Guest’ was always just magical, and when the Beast turned into the Prince, it just took my breath away every time.”

Fatima Recommends: Anastasia has everything that I look for in a show: a heartwarming story, great music, and beautiful costumes and sets. It’s a big musical that tells a story about bravery, hope, and love. The emotional connection with the story was felt by myself and everyone around me in the theatre.

Perfect For: Families and student groups of all ages.

Hope's Pick: Cats

Hope grew up in Pittsburgh, and she fell in love with theatre by accompanying her grandmother to performances by Broadway touring casts. Hope has had several different types of careers in the theatre industry, including a summer working in a prop department, and a summer working as a preshow performer at a Shakespeare Festival. While she no longer performs in the theatre, she still jams out on the bass guitar in a local band.

All-Time Favorite Musical: “I loved Fun Home, because while it’s about such an odd family, it’s also deeply universal. I was a fan of Alison Bechdel’s book, and when I heard they were making it into a musical, I thought, “How are they going to do that?” But then they did, and it was perfect.”

Hope Recommends: Cats is the perfect show for people of all ages. I missed my chance to see the original Broadway production, so I was excited when I heard it was coming back to Broadway. It was everything I hoped it would be. There is a lot of wonderful dance and choreography. Here’s a tip: When you see the show, make sure to go up on stage during intermission!

Perfect For: People who love cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber, or T. S. Eliot.
