There’s a new Dolly in town, and her name is Bernadette Peters. The Broadway legend, with three Tonys to her name, is set to step into the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi on January 20, 2018. Peters will be joined by another fixture of the stage and screen, Victor Garber.
In a statement, Peters acknowledged the long line of grand dames who have preceded her in the part: “I’m absolutely thrilled to continue in the tradition of the incomparable Bette Midler, Carol Channing, and all of the other wonderful actresses who have played Dolly Levi, and I look forward to joining this wonderful company at the Shubert.”
Bette Midler, who won a Tony Award this year for her portrayal of the mischievous matchmaker, will play her last performance on January 14, 2018. In her own heartfelt statement, Midler thanked the cast and crew of the production: “I cannot imagine leaving Dolly Levi in better hands than those of Bernadette Peters. I cannot wait to see her in the show from my very expensive premium seat in Row G which I know I will have to pay for. She is joining the greatest group of people I have ever worked with, and … I know they will take care of her the way they have taken care of me.”
