Staff Picks: Check Out Our Favorite Shows For Students

Broadway Inbound

Each and every group is unique. Whether you've got a birthday coming up or are planning a family reunion, each group has its own specific wants and needs when it comes to picking the perfect Broadway show. Fortunately, no one knows Broadway better than our staff at Broadway Inbound. We're lucky enough to see almost every show that opens on Broadway, which makes every staff member on our team a bona fide theatre expert.

There's nothing we love more than talking about our favorite shows, so we've assembled a list of some of our current Staff Picks. This month, we're talking about the Broadway's best shows for students. Read the picks below, and stay tuned for even more Staff Picks next month.

Ashlyn’s Pick: Anastasia

Ashlyn Recommends: I recommend Anastasia as the show takes a new spin on the classic movie without losing any of the charm. Students will be in awe of the costumes and enjoy the historical context behind the story. They also question what would they do if presented with information about a secret past. Would they set out a path of self-exploration? Or would they not take the journey at all?

Perfect For: Student groups and families, as the classic tale can be enjoyed by all ages. The songs are a mix of familiar and new so audiences will be thrilled to see how the songs tie together the characters’ relationships.

Anastasia in Three Words: Dazzling. Discovery. Charming.

Meet Ashlyn: Ashlyn’s first Broadway show was Chicago. The shining spotlights, detailed lace dresses cut short at the hem, and expertly choreographed dance sequences left her dazzled. Raised in upstate New York, trips to NYC were a common occurrence in Ashlyn’s family. The hustle and bustle of the city, the flashing billboards in the heart of Times Square, and the sense of following your dreams left her knowing that one day she would live and work in this fascinating city.

Lisa’s Pick: The Lion King

Lisa Recommends: The Lion King is everything you could want in a Broadway show. The direction and design of the show are truly incredible. It’s rare to see something so innovative and so cohesive. The costumes and sets are not just beautiful, they also fully serve the story. There’s a reason The Lion King has been running for 20 years, and you can feel it every moment you’re in the theatre

Perfect For: Everyone! It’s such a beloved story told in such an inspired way; it’s the perfect way to introduce students to the magic of live theatre and reinvigorate grown-ups’ love of Broadway .

Three Words: Innovative. Imaginative. Fun.

Meet Lisa: Lisa’s introduction to theatre came at an early age, when she performed in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar in San Francisco. She would go on to work at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts—now the Lyric Theatre—for the entire run of the original production of Ragtime, before landing at Broadway Inbound. For Lisa, the pull of Broadway has always been about the great sense of community.

Kevin’s Pick: Carousel

Kevin Recommends: Carousel is arguably Rodgers and Hammerstein’s greatest musical, and I for one can’t wait for this revival. With a cast of Broadway vets (Jessie Mueller, Joshua Henry, and Lindsay Mendez) as well as opera legend Renée Fleming in her Broadway musical debut, this production is sure to be one of the biggest events of the season. I’m particularly excited for the choreography by Justin Peck, resident choreographer for the New York City Ballet; I can’t wait to see what he does with “The Carousel Waltz.”

Perfect For: Anyone who is interested in a true classic from Broadway’s golden age. In particular, this is a great show for students of theatre—they don’t make ‘em like this anymore!

Carousel in Three Words: Classic. Sentimental. Gorgeous.

Meet Kevin: When Kevin was just six years old, his grandparents took him to see her first Broadway show: Beauty and the Beast at the Palace Theatre—and he still has the Playbill! “I love the experience of going to the theatre—a thousand people in the same room, all experiencing something wonderful together.”
